The Great Restaurant in the Twelfth Century Cellar

I have lived in Italy for ten years and would like to share with you my favourite restaurants. The Frantoio restaurant is top of my list.

Restaurants don't come better than this. Even if the food was not out of this world - which it is - this restaurant would be well worth visiting anyway. Il Frantoio is located in a twelfth century cellar the was converted to an olive oil mill in the sixteenth century. The place has to be seen to be believed.

The food, respecting the magnificent building, is true to ancient traditions. Traditional cuisine based on time-honored recipes. Prepared only with fresh seasonal ingredients, nothing frozen, canned or from anywhere but the local farms is served - only fresh and local is the strict policy.

The welcome here is always as warm as is the atmosphere. The first time I ate here I was made to feel that we were locals and part of the family. Service is excellent, not overbearing, and just perfect.

There is a good selection of local wines and the desserts made in house are also great. I normally don't like the local desserts much but these are most certainly worth trying - never to sweet and always freshly made.

The salamis and cheeses, all made locally, are mind-blowing. I sometimes come here for just a glass of red wine, more like a bottle really, but don't tell anyone, and eat only cheese and salami - heaven!! The wild boar salami is absolutely marvelous, a really unique taste.
