Wine Coolers - Showcase Your Wine Collection

Wine coolers, the little darling of the refrigerator world, began gaining popularity several years ago, promising to keep bottles chilled and ready to pour, are now a standard feature in most state of the art kitchens. This relatively unassuming appliance entered our homes and apartments, generating for us, more enthusiasm than most compressor driven appliances ever have.

And having welcomed the wine cooler into our kitchens, bars and offices we also began to open up another world, one where we could showcase our favorite wines. Now we, and others, can gaze into the softly lit interior visible through the cooler's glass doors, and easily view the prized trophies of our collection.

While wine coolers may showcase specimen and cults wines, they are also judged on their performance. This appliance is more than just your average refrigerator. Features like individual compartments are important for cooling red wine, white wine and champagne separately. Keeping each type at its' optimal temperature: (red between 55 to 60 degrees; white between 49 to 56 degrees; and champagne between 53 to 59 degrees) is necessary for preservation.

Another important factor in wine storage is to keep vibration to minimum so as not to disturb sediment. To achieve this, many wine coolers use thermoelectric cooling systems over the noisier and shakier compressor driven ones. Thermoelectric coolers are also more energy efficient and do not emit harmful CFCs.

And, to keep out the harmful UV rays, most glass door coolers feature tinted tempered glass doors. The tinted glass doors and all of the other features mentioned offer a nice way to store wine temporarily. Most small wine coolers on the market are designed for short term storage only (a few years). To age wines over decades, consider a more permanent storage solution like: building a wine cellar or buying a specialized wine cabinet.
